In some instances, it is not practical to repair an industrial engine for either financial reasons or because it is quicker to source and install a replacement engine.
We will always investigate all options for you, but if we believe that replacing the engine is the best and most cost effective solution, we will advise you of this.
Sourcing the engine that will meet the requirements of your application is not a simple task and requires someone with an extensive knowledge of both your engine and your application. With over 50 years of industrial engine remanufacturing, Murphy Engines has significant experience in engine replacement and a very wide reconditioned engine sourcing network.
As we not tied to any particular vendor, you can be assured of 100% independent advice, as the most suitable and readily available engine may not come from the same manufacturer as the existing engine. Pressure testing works following a basic principle that consists of plugging all the outlets of the cooling circuit of the cylinder head using rubber stoppers and then injecting pressurized air into the circuit. The cylinder head is then immersed in a hot-water bath and if it contains any cracks or fissures, a stream of air bubbles will be observed rising to the surface of the bath.
Hydraulic arms move the cradle holding the piece to be tested. The cradle is moved vertically by means of a hydraulic system. The cradle can also rotate a full 360 degrees making it far easier to check all sides of the cylinder head from every angle.

Cylinder head skimming (also called cylinder head resurfacing) is a machining process where a very thin layer of metal is removed from the surface of an engine’s cylinder head to make it perfectly flat again.
Why its done
It’s usually required when the head surface becomes warped or damaged, most commonly after:
- Engine overheating
- Blown head gasket
- Corrosion or pitting on the sealing surface
If the surface isn’t perfectly flat, the head gasket cannot seal properly, which can lead to:
- Coolant mixing with oil
- Loss of compression
- Engine overheating
- White smoke from the exhaust

Crankshaft grinding and polishing is a machine-shop process used to restore worn or damaged crankshafts in an engine so they can run smoothly again.
Crankshaft Grinding
Grinding removes a small amount of metal from the crankshaft journals (the smooth surfaces where bearings sit).

- Worn or scored journals
- Bearing failure
- Low oil pressure
- Damage from metal debris in the oil
Polishing is a finishing step after grinding.
What it does
- Smooths the journal surfaces
- Removes minor scratches
- Improves oil film retention

Cylinder block repair involves fixing damage or wear in the engine block so the engine can run correctly again. The cylinder block is the main structure of the engine, holding the cylinders, crankshaft, and coolant passages.
Typical repairs include
Honing
- Lightly removes material from cylinder walls.
- Creates a crosshatch pattern that helps piston rings seal and retain oil.
- Used when cylinders are slightly worn but still within tolerance.
Reboring
- Cylinders are bored larger using a boring machine.
- Removes wear or scoring.
- Requires oversize pistons and rings.
Lining
- A metal sleeve (liner) is installed inside the cylinder.
- Used when the cylinder is badly damaged or overbored.
- Restores it to standard size.
Deck refacing
- The top surface of the block is machined flat.
- Ensures proper head gasket sealing.

Pistons operate under very high heat and pressure, so they can suffer several types of damage.
Common piston problems
- Scoring or scratches on piston skirt
- Cracked piston crown
- Worn piston ring grooves
- Burnt piston top from overheating or detonation
- Broken piston rings
Repair methods
Cleaning and inspection
- Carbon deposits removed from piston crown and ring grooves.
Replacing piston rings
- Old rings replaced with new ones to restore compression.
Checking ring grooves
- If worn, special tools can re-cut grooves or pistons may need replacement.
Replacing damaged pistons
- If cracked or badly worn, pistons are usually replaced instead of repaired.

Connecting Rod (Con-Rod) Repair
The connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft and must remain perfectly straight.
Common con-rod problems
- Bent rods (from engine seizure or hydro lock)
- Twisted rods
- Worn big-end bearings
- Damaged small-end bush
- Overheated or cracked rods
Repair methods
Big-end resizing
- The big end is machined to restore a perfect circular shape.
Small-end bush replacement
- The bushing for the piston pin is replaced and reamed to correct size.
Bearing replacement
- New con-rod bearings installed during engine rebuild.
